Another survival set is ready! With one of the biggest an toughest knives I made in a years. I have used a new steel for this one - tool steel with polish code NZ3. This type of steel is often use to make cutting edge for axes and with hardness of about 56 HRC will not be easy to break. Of course I could not stop myself do do some tests and now I can't wait to make more projects with it. It is tough but unfortunatelly it will rust as easy as any other carbon steel blade.
This time for a sharpener I have not used Fallkniven DC3 but a more compact "DiaSam" two sided diamond sharpener with 600/1500 which I cut to the size I wanted to have. Cutting and grinding that diamond coated steel occured to be a very difficult task but now I have my first customized sharpener ever! As always I made my own handle for a fire starter rod.
Steel: NZ3 carbon steelBlade thickness: 6 mm
Blade length: 15.5 cm
Overall length: 27,8 cm
Handle material: green canvas micarta
Leather sheath
Two side diamond sharpener
Micarta firestarter
Another time the knife in a set is 'just' a very simple tool. It was a sheath that took me a lot of time to finish. I decided to add an additional pouch for firestarter, sharpener and some other small stuff like waterproof matches, fishing line, safety pins etc. Also the sheath is designed for vertical and horizontal carry. With 4mm leather and double stitch I belive it is as tough as the knife :)
Edit:
After making those photos above I decided to heatwax the leather to make sure that it will be 100% waterproof. I have used a natural bee wax so it got darker and now looks like this.
And some epic oldstyle western music ;)
